Belgacom customers create one large wifi network

Wifi hotspots were not very popular in Belgium, mainly because there were too few hotspots. On top of that, most smartphones can access the internet using their GPRS network.

Belgacom, in cooperation with the Spanish company Fon, presented an innovative solution for this market, which will use the local wifi modem of their customers to create local wifi hotspots. Around 100 000 modems would be used to create hotspots, which would make large populated areas such as cities one giant wifi hotspot for customers of Belgacom.

For 2012, Belgacom estimates the number of wifi modems in its network will increase to 500 000.

The service is free for Belgacom customers, if they open up their own modem as well for external traffic. Internal internet traffic would receive priority on the traffic of external wifi users logging in to your modem. The security of the system would be guaranteed due to the separation of the external wifi traffic from the internal wifi traffic.
