Company cars: What do you need to know?

Company cars usually represent one of the Top 5 costs in the general expenses (Cost of leasing, insurances, maintenance, fuel, tyres...)

In large structures, the car fleet is often organised by a fleet manager. The management is traditionally divided between several departments, the Finance Department supports the costs of acquiring and / or lease, while the general services assume maintenance. The legal department or human resources supervise their part, insurance records and accidents. This division of labor leads inexorably to the financial amounts significant overhead for the company. A healthy fleet management need to go through a globalization of all, each department functioning interdependently.

  • The rent is formed from the negotiated price (different from the retail price in the range 8-15%), increased the rate of funding, management fees and residual value to pay at the end of the contract.
  • The residual value will depend on the vehicle (power, reputation, options ...), mileage, the vintage vehicle and its condition. This residual value may count for 10 to 40% of the purchase value of the vehicle.
  • It is interesting to negotiate directly with a manufacturer for fleet over a hundred vehicles (same brand)
  • Beware of the "estimated mileage", you have to establish it at the time of hire because that is an essential part of the rent. Be aware that excess mileage can be very expensive.
  • Only take the services you really need in terms of management. Landlords have developed many services that are often not used by the client
  • Consider implementing a policy for vehicle use in the company. It also means ensuring that it can not be any deviations resulting in additional costs.
  • Ask for a complete price schedule to avoid being surprised in the middle of the contract with unbudgeted costs.
