The secrets of Colruyt to reduce costs

To guarantee the lowest prices on the market, Colruyt must constantly be looking for solutions to reduce costs to a minimum. Here are some ideas that Colruyt has set up:

  • Carts without coin: That’s a savings of 14 euros per cart. The customer must no more use a coin. It seems that the client bring back the cart as often as if he should insert a coin.
  • Flintcoat floors: cheaper, durable, easy to maintain and it repairs itself. A claw disappears after a while.
  • Energy efficient freezers: Compared with open vertical models, they are more energy efficient and protected from light.
  • A cold chamber: It replaces the open fridges and can be closed by a flap at night to avoid energy losses.
  • A warehouse above the shelves: The stock is placed above the shelves. This saves storage space and allows for easier restocking.
  • Efficient Lighting: Special aluminum reflectors can reflect more light toward the ground. Fewer lamps are needed.
  • Not using neon signs at night: In the parking stores, the neon is off from 22:30 to 6:30.
  • 2 parking lines instead of 3: To delineate the parking spaces, two lines are painted instead of 3. These lines are thiner to save the painting.
  • Load trucks to their maximum: The trucks are always filled (on average 96%). Even on the way back, they carry the material to be recycled.
  • Refrigerated carts instead of refrigerated trucks: These carts are brought in classic trucks, less expensive than refrigerated trucks. The fresh and frozen products can be transported with other products and directly brought on the shelf.
  • Valuable waste: Waste from shops are sorted and sold to recycling companies. This avoid waste removal costs.
  • Distributors lighting: By not illuminating the drink distributors, a saving of € 250 per year is made at each distributor.  [1]
