Energy markets: Super concentration in Belgium

For electricity production, the Belgian market is concentrated more than ever.

Follorwing the latest calculations of the Creg and the regional energy regulators, Electrabel had a market share in 2010 equivalent to 72%, though declining over the past two years. The second actor was the SPE (owned by French EDF) with 15%. Then comes the German E. ON, with 9%. E.ON has gained this position after an exchange of production capacity with Electrabel.

The index used to assess market concentration, HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index), reached the value of 5.500. According to the CREG, a market is considered highly concentrated when the HHI is greater than o equal to 2.000...  [1]
