IT infrastructure: complex savings but large potential

  • First and essential: Make a complete inventory of your infrastructure.
  • Find in details what you have, why you use it, since when, how many users, which providers, how much you pay, which conditions...
  • Evaluate your current needs and estimate the future purchase previsions (These previsions are essential to be able to negotiate efficiently)
  • Elaborate a clear negotiation plan and your strategy.
  • Consolidate your infrastructure as much as possible (networks, servers, data centers, networks...).
  • Avoid multiple coverage: for example you may have several maintenance agreements that cover the same products.
  • Purchase directly to the manufacturers
  • Group orders to make one large purchase
  • Consider refurbished or second hand equipment (Apple, HP, Dell, Amazon and others offer large discounts, average 10-30%, on certified refurbished equipment).
  • Define precise service level agreements with penalties for noncompliance
  • Ask vendors for reductions in maintenance and support costs
  • Once price is agreed, consider additional terms, training, assistance that could be included
