Higher taxes for company cars?
Belgium now has 6 million vehicles in circulation: 5.2 million are cars and 0.8 are vans and trucks. Among these cars, 4.1 million are registered in the name of individuals and 1.1 million on behalf of companies from which 350 million on behalf of self-employed and 750 million on behalf of companies. This is three to four times higher than in the rest of europe.
A survey of the CD&V shows that 23% of employees have a company car and 60% of self-employed have such a car through their company.
The reason for the success of company cars is obviously the high taxation on the gross salary. Belgium holds the world record for the granting of fringe benefits.
In order to address the problem of traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions, the government plans to limit the company cars. There will be no reduction in wage costs. On the contrary, employers and employees will pay the tax increase that can be expected.
Taxes on cars are already relatively high in our country because it already accounts for more than 8 billion euros.
For some, this attractive tax regime has a significant impact on the ecological and should be phased out. For other car company offers some relief with respect to fiscal and social charges on the high salaries. In addition, the surplus revenue for the state can only be temporary because jobs will disappear or will not be created.
Today, the employee contributes to the use of company car for private purposes, or it pays a tax benefit in kind. The employer pays a CO ² contribution to the national Office of Social Security (NOSS) and can only deduct a part of the cost of the car for the corporation tax.
According to Michel Martens Febiac: "Company cars are in the line of fire almost every year during the preparation of the budget. In recent years, the tax system has been modified several times, sometimes to generate additional revenue, sometimes for environment reasons. "
If the employee or employer choose for a car with low carbon emissions - the choice is becoming wider - the taxable benefit may be limited to a minimum. This is also true for the employer: a company car which is environmentally friendly can be tax deductible up to 90%.
